Wight On!!

July 31, 2011

Mallaig, Scotland – Motorcycle road racing on the Isle of Wight……

What a cracking idea!!

If the campaign set up by Kara Rann, who was born and raised on the Isle of Wight (IoW), succeeds we could end up with motorcycle road racing and a venue that rivals the TT and the Isle of Man (IoM).

There are a number of factors that are in the campaigns favour. The IoW Council is about to partner up in a  £260 million UK Government grant funded scheme that will see all the IoW’s publicly owned highways resurfaced and then maintained to UK national standards.

The UK Motor Sports Association has successfully lobbied the UK Government to consult  on changes to the existing Road Traffic Act (RTA) that would permit Local Authorities to suspend the RTA and thus allow racing on roads closed to the public.

Interestingly the IoM Government Department of Economic Development, the commercial rights holders for the TT Races, has invited expressions of interest from individuals or businesses to carry out a feasibility study for a proposed TT Races World Championship Series. Yes folks moves are in hand to franchise out the TT into a global road race series. Could we see a round fought out on the roads of the IoW?

Then there are the islands residents. Combing through the forums and local papers the idea of motorcycle road racing on the IoW has, unsurprisingly, met with  a mixed reception. There is support from the local Member of Parliament  and some local councillors and business interests who are no doubt aware of the huge economic benefit that a road race Motorcycle Festival, similar to the IoM TT, could  bring to the island.

Of course we have those who frequently engage in excessive complaining, negative banter and/or a genuinely poor and downbeat attitude sometimes called the naysayers. If rumour and allegation are to be believed then they are the reason that the British round of the  FIM World Motocross Championship bit the dust in the IoW.

So what about electric sport bike racing? Has Ms Rann missed a trick here. Perhaps the IoW could become a major global venue for electric motorcycle racing, development and building. A sort of silicon island electric bike wise. At least the complaints about noise would fade away!

Good luck Kara I really hope this comes to something. I’d love to see bikes racing through, Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin and wow up the Ventnor Zig Zag. Biking needs this, the IoW needs this.

You can join the Campaign for the Isle of Wight TT on Facebook here….

Ride with pride, on even ride in Ryde!

Barbie girl has much to say about the Isle of Man TT and even more on real road racing in Northern Ireland. Perhaps the IoW team may wish to consider her views?
